Making Michigan the Most Active State in the Nation

The Challenge

Michigan's Physical Inactivity Crisis

The numbers are stark — representing millions of Michiganders missing out on one of the most powerful health interventions available.

30.2%

of Michigan adults meet national Physical Activity Guidelines — leaving nearly 7 in 10 adults falling short.

20.5%

of Michigan youth meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity. More than 1 in 10 are not active for even an hour on any given day.

$5.3B

is Michigan's estimated annual share of physical inactivity costs — in healthcare expenditures and lost workplace productivity.

Disparities follow predictable patterns: women are less active than men, Black adults face the highest inactivity rates, and activity drops sharply with age and lower income.

Our Approach

Our Path to an Active State

The Problem

Michigan residents face systemic barriers to physical activity: limited access, few supportive policies, and cultural norms that deprioritize movement.

Our Solution

Michigan Moves collaborates with a multi-sector Coalition of organizations to implement the Michigan Physical Activity Plan across all 10 societal sectors.
